If you want to know the relationships between the white and the black, I recommend you to read the novels written by Toni Morrison, but if you tend to see of which position the black women is in their own family, you'd better read Alice Walker. They are ridiculed by the white, abused by their "masters" and silienced by those basters' violence. They are mute as mule. Fortunately, some of them are powerful, either spiritually or physically. Sophia was stout, challenging the stereotyped role of a black woman should play under the dominance of the head of her family. But the relentless hits and beats in jail crushed her spirit. She was silenced and confused, maybe perplexing about the future of her "sisters". However, when Celie roared up against Albert, Sophia, together with Squeak,divined the road they should take. They were awakened from somnolence. But their awakening took over 30 years to take place. Shug Avery acted as a mentor instilling into Celie's intimidated mind the idea of love, independence and freedom. The end of the story is quite satisfacotry and touching, especially when Celie and Nettie clasp hands together under the golden setting sun among the reeds. It is altogter a heavy story but not devoid of laugter and warmth.
